Rome's most beloved pastry shop, open since 1916 in the Esquilino neighbourhood. The maritozzo is its crown jewel: a lightly sweet, perfectly risen brioche roll filled with an obscenely generous mound of fresh whipped cream — the platonic ideal of the Roman pastry. Arrive before 8am for best selection; maritozzi sell out by noon. Also extraordinary: wild strawberry tart, pistachio-cream-filled cornetti, scorzette d'arancia (candied orange in dark chocolate). The 1970s signage is unchanged and charming.
