A dying Gallic warrior propping himself up in his last moments — an enemy depicted with such dignity and humanity that the work entirely transcends its propagandistic origin. No Roman triumph needed. Keats referenced it; Byron wrote of him in Childe Harold. The sculptor created an opponent so nobly human he became one of the most beloved ancient works ever made.
