The only Caravaggio in the Vatican — and the one his contemporaries admired most unanimously. The weight of the dead Christ is completely palpable. The diagonal composition from Mary Magdalene's raised arm to the stone slab below is perfect. Rubens painted a copy of it. More than any other Caravaggio this work reconciled his radical realism with the devotional tradition of the Church.
