Statue of Giordano Bruno marks his execution spot (1600).

Campo de' Fiori, 00186 Roma RM, Italy

An open-air food and flower market by day and a buzzing bar and restaurant scene by night — uniquely, the only major Roman square without a church. The bronze statue at its centre is the philosopher Giordano Bruno, burned alive on this exact spot in 1600 for heresy (specifically, for claiming the universe is infinite and contains other inhabited worlds). The market sells produce, cheeses, spices, and pasta from around 7am to 2pm Monday through Saturday; in the evenings the cafés and bars take over.
