Sunset is spectacular — arrive 30 min early in summer for parapet space.
Viale Gabriele D'Annunzio, 00197 Roma RM, Italy
An elegant 19th-century promenade designed by Giuseppe Valadier in the early 1800s, above Piazza del Popolo and connected to Villa Borghese above. Lined with marble busts of Italian patriots, Risorgimento heroes, scientists, and intellectuals — about 230 in total. Considered Rome's finest free panoramic terrace, with sweeping views across the rooftops to St. Peter's dome and the Janiculum. Especially beautiful at sunset, when the western light hits the domes. The clock tower's water-powered hydraulic clock (1873) is still functional and tells time using a hidden tank system.
