Viale dell'Aranciera, Villa Borghese, 00197 Roma RM, Italy
The small artificial lake at the heart of Villa Borghese — one of Rome's most romantic and photogenic spots, created in the 18th century and centred on a small island bearing the neoclassical Temple of Aesculapius (god of medicine), built in 1787 by Antonio Asprucci and reflected perfectly in the still water. Rowing boats can be hired by the hour at the lakeside. Surrounded by weeping willows, pine trees, and plane trees, the lake has a dreamlike quality that feels entirely removed from the city outside the park walls. Popular with couples, families, and photographers, particularly at golden hour when the temple is reflected in the water. Among the most Instagrammed spots in all of Rome. Consistently recommended by Devour Tours, What a Life Tours, and Viator as the most magical specific spot within Villa Borghese.
