Crypta Balbi (National Roman Museum)

Built around the excavated remains of an ancient Roman portico (13 BC), this is the most thoughtful museum in Rome about how the city continuously rebuilt itself over 2,000 years. The exhibition takes you through layers from antiquity through the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, with finds that show daily life across each era.
