The Altar of Augustan Peace (13–9 BC), carved with imperial processions and mythological scenes, preserved inside Richard Meier's striking modern glass pavilion (2006). The pavilion was Rome's first major contemporary architecture in the historic centre and remains controversial — but it gives the altar excellent natural light. The downstairs exhibition space hosts rotating photography and contemporary art shows.
