Bramante's Tempietto in the courtyard is one of architecture's most important small buildings.
Piazza San Pietro in Montorio, 2, 00153 Roma RM, Italy
On the Janiculum Hill, traditionally identified as the site of Saint Peter's crucifixion (though St. Peter's Basilica, with the actual tomb, is the official site). The church is interesting in itself, with a Sebastiano del Piombo Flagellation, but the real reason to come is the Tempietto in the adjoining courtyard — Donato Bramante's perfect 1502 circular temple, just 4.5 metres in diameter, regarded as one of the founding works of High Renaissance architecture and the model for St. Peter's dome itself. The view from the church terrace over Rome is sweeping.
