Piazza del Popolo
00187 Roma
One of the first obelisks brought to Rome — by Emperor Augustus in 10 BC as a trophy of his Egyptian conquest, originally on the spine of the Circus Maximus. Re-erected by Pope Sixtus V in 1589 as the first landmark seen by pilgrims entering Rome from the north. Still dominates Piazza del Popolo between the twin Baroque churches.
