Fragments of a 12-metre seated statue of Constantine I — the hand alone is the size of a child. One of the most reproduced images of ancient Rome, instantly recognisable: the enormous fixed eyes staring upward, the superhuman scale meant to convey imperial and divine authority. The full statue would have dwarfed the room it stood in. Found in the Basilica of Maxentius in the Forum; the rest of the bronze statue was melted down in antiquity.
