The oldest surviving apse mosaic in any Christian church in the world. Christ enthroned as a Roman emperor between Apostles dressed as senators — Christianity adopting the full visual language of imperial Rome. Behind: a monumental cross against a sunset sky, and the four Evangelists' symbols appearing for the first time in Christian art. Partially damaged but what survives is irreplaceable.
