Via Sacra

The 'Sacred Way' was the most important street in ancient Rome, running from the Capitoline Hill through the Forum to the Colosseum and serving as the route of triumphal processions — where victorious generals paraded captives, treasure, and sometimes elephants before climbing to the Temple of Jupiter. The basalt paving stones still bear ruts worn by chariot wheels two thousand years ago. Walking it at dusk, when crowds thin and the stones glow, is one of the most evocative experiences in Rome.
