Via Appia Antica, 00178 Roma RM, Italy
The 'Queen of Roads,' begun in 312 BC by the censor Appius Claudius Caecus to link Rome with the south of Italy — the first true paved highway in history. The first 19 kilometres of original basalt paving still run past tombs, columbaria, aqueducts, and catacombs, lined with umbrella pines. The road is closed to most traffic on Sundays, making it the best day to walk or rent a bike from the visitor centre at Porta San Sebastiano.
