Visit at dawn (06:00) for an empty fountain. Toss a coin over your left shoulder.
Piazza di Trevi, 00187 Roma RM, Italy
Rome's most theatrical fountain, completed in 1762 by Nicola Salvi at the terminus of the Acqua Vergine — an aqueduct that has supplied the city with fresh water continuously since 19 BC. The 26-metre Baroque tableau shows Oceanus driving a chariot of seahorses, flanked by allegories of Abundance and Health. About 3,000 in coins are tossed in daily and donated to the Catholic charity Caritas; legend says one coin guarantees a return to Rome, two find love, three lead to marriage. Made internationally iconic by Fellini's La Dolce Vita.
