Often called 'Nero's Tower' but actually built 1,000 years after Nero died.
Salita del Grillo, 37, 00184 Roma RM, Italy
A massive brick medieval tower (early 13th century) above Trajan's Markets — Rome's tallest surviving medieval tower at 50 metres, despite losing its top floor in a 1348 earthquake (which is also when it acquired its slight lean). Often nicknamed 'Nero's Tower' in older guidebooks because of a long-debunked legend that Nero watched Rome burn from here in 64 AD — but the tower was actually built around 1,200 years after Nero died. Visited as part of the Trajan's Markets ticket.
