Via Raffaele Persichetti, 00153 Roma RM, Italy

A 36-metre marble-clad pyramid (12 BC), tomb of magistrate Gaius Cestius — built during the wave of Egyptomania that swept Rome after Augustus's conquest of Cleopatra's Egypt in 30 BC. It's the only ancient pyramid in Europe, and its survival is owed to being incorporated into the Aurelian Walls in 275 AD. The adjoining Non-Catholic Cemetery, where Keats and Shelley are buried, is one of Rome's most peaceful corners — combine the two in a single visit.
