Piazza di Porta San Paolo, 00153 Roma RM, Italy
A 3rd-century gate of the Aurelian Walls leading toward the basilica of San Paolo Fuori le Mura — the gate from which Saint Paul was traditionally believed to have left Rome on his way to martyrdom. It's also the heroic site of the September 1943 anti-Nazi defense of Rome, when Italian soldiers and civilians fought briefly to keep the German army out of the city after Italy's armistice with the Allies. A plaque on the gate commemorates the resistance fighters who died here.
