Ponte Vittorio Emanuele II, 00186 Roma RM, Italy
A late-19th-century bridge (1886–1911) leading from Corso Vittorio Emanuele II toward St. Peter's. Decorated with allegorical bronze sculptures personifying the four virtues of Italian Unification — Liberty, Loyalty, Heroism, and the Triumph over Tyranny. It was deliberately built at this oblique angle to align with the route to the Vatican, anticipating the later cutting of Via della Conciliazione under Mussolini. The view of St. Peter's dome from the eastern end at sunset is unforgettable.
