Site of Caesar's assassination (44 BC). A protected cat sanctuary lives among the ruins. €5; free to view from street
Largo di Torre Argentina, 00186 Roma RM, Italy
Four Republican-era temples uncovered during 1920s urban demolition, the oldest dating to the 4th century BC and dedicated to the goddess Feronia. The site's real fame, however, lies just beside it: this is the exact location of the Curia of Pompey, where Julius Caesar was stabbed to death on the Ides of March, 44 BC. The ruins also house Rome's most famous cat sanctuary, where volunteers care for hundreds of strays who roam freely among the temples — a uniquely Roman scene.
