Caused public scandal at its 1901 unveiling for the bronze nudes' realism.
Piazza della Repubblica, 00185 Roma RM, Italy
A Belle Époque fountain unveiled in stages between 1888 and 1901 at the centre of Piazza della Repubblica. Four bronze nymphs grapple sensually with sea creatures — a swan, a sea horse, a sea monster, and a snake — each representing a different type of water (lakes, rivers, oceans, underground streams). The sculptor Mario Rutelli's nudes caused public scandal at unveiling and were briefly veiled with sheets; today they're simply one of Rome's most distinctive monuments, dramatically lit after dark.
