Vatican City, 00120 Città del Vaticano
The private gardens of Vatican City — 23 hectares of manicured gardens, fountains, pergolas, and monumental architecture occupying more than half the entire area of the Vatican state, behind and above St. Peter's Basilica. The gardens have been cultivated by successive popes since the 13th century, evolving through medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and English landscape styles. Highlights include the Casina di Pio IV (a Renaissance jewel designed by Pirro Ligorio, 1558–1561), the Tower of St. John, and extraordinary fountains including the Eagle Fountain (a gift from Cardinal Ippolito d'Este). Pope Francis is frequently seen walking the gardens in the mornings. Accessible only via guided tours booked through the Vatican Museums (the garden tour is separate from the standard ticket). Consistently featured by GetYourGuide and Viator as one of the Vatican's most serene and underappreciated experiences.
