Via Trionfale, 00136 Roma RM, Italy

Rome's highest point — a 139-metre hill in the northwest of the city, rising above the Vatican and the Tiber bend, protected as a regional natural park since 1987. Monte Mario offers the most comprehensive panoramic view in all of Rome: the entire city laid out from the Vatican dome to the Alban Hills, the Apennine Mountains on clear days, the seven hills, and the historic centre below. The hill is draped in Mediterranean macchia, ancient cypress groves, and ilex woods, threaded by walking and cycling trails. At the summit stands the Rome Observatory (Osservatorio Astronomico di Monte Porzio, 1935), closed to general visitors but visible from the paths. Mentioned by Spotted by Locals as "the king of Rome" for its views. Far less visited than the Janiculum or Pincio terraces, making it the best viewpoint in the city for anyone wanting the panorama without the crowds.
