The Vatican's painting gallery, set up by Pope Pius XI in 1932, with 460 paintings spanning the 11th–19th centuries. Highlights include Raphael's Transfiguration (his last work, displayed at his funeral), Caravaggio's Deposition, Leonardo's unfinished Saint Jerome, and Giotto's Stefaneschi Triptych. Far less crowded than the rest of the Vatican Museums route.
