Holds the gridiron on which Saint Lawrence was traditionally martyred.
Via in Lucina, 16/A, 00186 Roma RM, Italy
Founded in the 5th century, this church claims to hold the iron gridiron on which Saint Lawrence was reportedly grilled to death in 258 AD (a fragment is in a chapel to the right of the entrance). Inside is one of Bernini's most beautiful sculptures, his bust of Gabriele Fonseca (1668-75). The painter Nicolas Poussin is buried here, with a memorial bust commissioned in the 19th century by Chateaubriand. Just steps from the parliament (Montecitorio) — a quiet retreat from a busy political district.
