Inside the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, this side chapel houses two of Caravaggio's most powerful paintings: The Conversion of Saint Paul (1601) — showing Saul thrown from his horse on the road to Damascus, with the horse's massive rump dominating the foreground — and The Crucifixion of Saint Peter, with elderly muscular workmen straining to raise the upside-down cross. Annibale Carracci's altarpiece (Assumption of the Virgin) hangs between them. A complete Caravaggio masterpiece in a single chapel.
