Basilica of Saint Pudentiana

Tradition holds that this is the very house where Saint Peter himself stayed while preaching in Rome in the 1st century AD, the residence of the Senator Pudens. Now contains the oldest surviving Christian apse mosaic in Rome (390 AD) — a serene, sun-drenched scene of Christ enthroned among the apostles in togas, with the actual rooftops of imperial Rome behind them. A precious survival from before the conventions of Byzantine iconography were established. The current Philippine national church in Rome. Limited opening hours.
