Via Santa Prassede 9a, 00185 Roma
The most jewel-like interior in Rome — a tiny chapel covered floor-to-ceiling in gold-ground Byzantine mosaics. Every surface: vault, lunettes, entrance arch. Nicknamed the 'Garden of Paradise' by medieval pilgrims. The column at the entrance is said to have been used in the flagellation of Christ. €0.50 coin to illuminate. The effect is simply staggering — the chapel measures only a few metres across.
