Mausoleo di Santa Costanza
Via Nomentana 349, 00162 Roma
The oldest surviving large-scale Christian mosaics in the world — covering the barrel-vaulted ambulatory of a circular mausoleum built for Constantine's daughter. The mosaics borrow entirely from pagan Roman art (vine scrolls, putti, birds) repurposed for a Christian building at a moment when Christian iconography barely existed. Bring €0.50 to illuminate. Absolutely essential for the origins of Western Christian art.
